Free SVG Files for Cricut Beginners: 7 Easy First Projects

The best first Cricut projects use one color, bold shapes and a forgiving material. Start there and you'll learn cutting, weeding and transferring before you take on anything detailed. Here are seven easy wins, each with a free SVG to try.
Before you start
You'll need a Cricut (Explore, Maker or Joy), a StandardGrip mat, a weeding tool and your material. To get a file into Design Space, follow our step-by-step guide on uploading an SVG to Cricut Design Space.
1. A one-color tote bag
Iron-on vinyl on a canvas tote is the classic first project: flat, sturdy and hard to get wrong. Try the Farmers Market tote design or a bold single-color motif like the Boho Sun.
2. A simple T-shirt
Once the tote works, a shirt is the same process on fabric. Choose a design with chunky shapes and few tiny pieces, like Mama Bear. Our guide to making a shirt with iron-on vinyl walks you through it.
3. A mug or tumbler decal
Permanent adhesive vinyl on a ceramic mug teaches you transfer tape. Keep decals around 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm) wide. Note that permanent vinyl is hand-wash only.
4. A wood sign
A painted wood round or plank with a vinyl stencil or decal makes a lovely gift. The Home Sweet Home and round Welcome sign designs are sized for signs.
5. Pantry labels
Small, quick and useful: cut words in permanent vinyl for jars and canisters. Our kitchen printables guide has more ideas.
6. A layered sunflower
When one color feels easy, try a two-layer design. The Bloom Where You Are Planted sunflower is a good step up.
7. A detailed mandala
Save intricate designs like the mandala for when you're comfortable weeding fine lines. Use a fresh blade and cut slightly larger.
Beginner tips that save material
- Do a test cut (the small shape Design Space offers) before cutting a full sheet.
- Mirror iron-on vinyl; never mirror adhesive vinyl.
- Weed on a warm surface: slightly warm vinyl releases more easily.
- Lock proportions before resizing so designs don't stretch.
